Book Review: Wintergirls by LHA

Wintergirls Wintergirls
Author: Laurie Halse Andersen
Published: March 19th 2009 by Viking Juvenile

"For one moment we are not failed tests and broken condoms and cheating on essays; we are crayons and lunch boxes and swinging so high our sneakers punch holes in the clouds. For one breath everything feels better. Then it melts."
--"Wintergirls" by Laurie Halse Anderson

Lia wakes up on Monday morning to find that her best friend, Cassie, is dead. She died alone in a cold, dark hotel room.  All that is left for Lia is thirty-three missed calls from Cassie, a family torn by divorce, and the hope of losing just a few more pounds.

Lia struggles to hide her depression, the cuts on her thighs, and her quickly decreasing weight.  Will Lia continue lies, the cutting, the weight loss or will she end up like Cassie—cold, dead, and alone.

If you enjoyed Cut by Patricia McCormick, Scars by Cheryl Rainfield, or Impulse Ellen Hopkins I know you'll enjoy this!

  1. Thank you so much for including Scars! I think all the books you mentioned here deal with hard issues in a good way, and all are similar in some way, so I'm glad--and honored--to see your recommendation.

  2. You're so welcome! I picked Scars up a couple years ago because I liked the cover, and I DEVOURED your book. It was fantastic and haunting.
