Book Review: Divergent by Veronica Roth

Book Review: Divergent by Veronica Roth
Book #1 of the Divergent Series

I am current reading, and absolutely enjoying, Divergent.  Yeah, yeah I know I am late to be jumping on the bandwagon with this one.  I just now started reading it after months and months of everyone telling me, “Read that book, Clair”.   Let me just saw—it’s excellent.  Since, it’s such a long book, and because I am not finished with it—this is my midway review. I am currently on page 316 about to start chapter twenty-five which according to goodreads.com means I am 65% through the book.  But this review is just going to set up the book for you.  I promise no spoilers!

Tris, formerly now as Beatrice, is sixteen years old and must now chose a faction.  (A faction is kinda like if you combine house from Harry Potter and the districts from the Hunger Games.)  Each faction has separate housing, customs, belief, and job options.  Your faction is more important than family, it is your community, your identity and your life.  Each faction has one trait that sets them apart from the other factions.

Tris is originally from the Abnegation faction in which the members strive to be selfless.  They believe selfishness is the utmost evil.  They live and eat simply, and do not focus on outward appearances.   Unlike Tris’s family, Tris is not naturally selfless and must be reminded frequently to think of others before herself.  In Tris’s world sixteen is the age that citizens become a true member of a faction.  First the sixteen year olds are tested with a virtual reality simulator.  During the simulated they are given different situation that will show them what trait they exemplify the most: selflessness, bravery, intelligence, peacefulness, or honesty.  Based on their results the teens chose what faction they will belong to.  Many of the teens chose the faction there parents belong to, but Tris is unique.  She exemplifies traits from more than one faction.  She is told that she is Divergent, and is only told that Divergent means that she could belong to multiple factions.  It also is very dangerous, and she is told to never tell another living soul that she is Divergent or she will be murdered.
